Broken veins (medically known as telangiectasias) are small red to purple dilated blood capillaries or vessels, often found on the skin of the face (cheeks, forehead, chin, nose).
Capillaries are the body’s tiniest blood vessels. They are super thin, about the width of a piece of hair and only one-cell big. This tiny tube transports oxygen and important nutrients throughout the body. Since capillaries are so delicate, the ones that run just beneath the surface of the skin can be sensitive to harsh external (or internal) factors.
Broken capillaries occur when the walls of the veins weaken, dilate and become more visible against the surface of the skin.
There are several factors that cause broken capillaries or veins such as over-exposure to the sun, windburn, natural ageing process, rapid expansion and contraction from tobacco and alcohol use, extreme temperatures, heredity or trauma. Thread veins on face are more likely to occur in those with fair, thin or sensitive skin or in people suffering from other skin problems like rosacea or severe acne.
Anyone who experienced this problem knows that these vessels do not heal on their own and therefor thread vein removal treatment is the best option.
The most common thread vein removal treatment is a laser therapy. It is a safe and quick procedure. At Derma Mind Laser Clinic we use FDA approved Cynosure Elite Nd Yag laser to treat them. During laser treatment, laser light pulses are sent into the veins, coagulating blood supply and then the body eliminates this blood trough lymphatic system. The laser beam affects only the blood vessel, not the skin. We are mainly treating thread veins on face.
When treating visible thread veins on face, results can usually be seen soon following the procedure. Generally after these visible capillaries laser removal treatment, 2-4 weeks time is required to see the final result.
Often just after 1 to 3 sessions, differences can be noticed and those facial veins that has been treated and gone, they usually never come back. There are cases when more sessions are required, depending on the lymphatic system's ability to eliminate it.
However sometimes different thread veins can present in a similar place later, and therefore it can be treated again.
For laser safely treat these facial vascular concerns, we can treat individuals with skin types I – III, according to Fitzpatrick scale. Skin type IV, V and VI is extremely high on risk to develop hypopigmentation (an area of skin becoming lighter than the baseline skin colour), therefor we do not do this treatment for those individuals.
BE AWARE: We do not treat pregnant or breast-feeding women with lasers as a precaution and we put treatment on hold during this time.
IMPORTANT: This procedure is not suitable for leg thread veins and those who have diabetes. Laser therapy is not suitable to treat dark blue veins under the eye area or top of the eyelid!
