Cherry Angioma Removal Treatment

red round spots cherry angioma chest arm face laser removal Stockport clinic

What are these red spots or cherry angiomas?

The bright red spot that appear on our body or face is called cherry angioma. They are also known as Campbell de Morgan spots. Best described as a small, red benign skin growth that can develop virtually anywhere on your body, though they are most found on the arms, shoulders and torso.

These red spots are usually harmless and non-cancerous, however they will not go away of their own and can feel uncomfortable if under pressure from items of clothing. Their appearance can be unsightly and can impact self-esteem. For this reason, many people choose to undergo with cherry angioma removal treatment.

IMPORTANT: We recommend that you see your doctor if your red cherry angioma spot starts bleeding or changes size, shape or colour! In some cases, doctor may wish to biopsy the lesion to confirm the diagnosis before cherry angioma laser removal.

What causes red spots to appear?

It’s unknown what causes cherry angiomas to form, though many people may be genetically more likely to develop them. Several other possible factors can contribute to their progression, such as pregnancy, exposure to the sun, certain medications (such as radiation therapy) or stress. There appears to be a link between cherry angiomas and age. They often begin to appear when individuals reach 30 years old and seem to increase in size and number with age.

Cherry angioma removal treatment

iteTeThere are quite few possibilities to remove them, like cryosurgery, advanced electrolysis, IPL, but the best way to remove these red papules is a medical laser therapy.

At our clinic, we use FDA approved Cynosure Elite+ YAG laser. Laser works by targeting hemoglobin, where broken blood vessels stick together in one area, creating a lesion. Raised, bright cherry color papules respond the best to this type of treatment.

The treatment is very safe and quick, and it will not cause any damage or scarring on your surrounded skin. Cherry angioma laser removal treatment is very popular at our clinic.

NOTE: If your cherry angioma is flat, small and looks like red small dot rather then pumped raised angioma, we offer electrolysis treatment for these small blood spots to remove.

How many sessions will you need?

This popular treatment is highly effective in most cases and you should see changes of your cherry angioma within ten to fourteen days of treatment.

Generally, between 1-2 treatments might be necessary to completely remove cherry angiomas, especially if they are big and raised. However there are cases when more sessions are required, depending on the lymphatic system's ability to eliminate it (immune-suppressants, antidepressants and anticoagulant medication always slows down healing process and results).

Who is suitable to have laser cherry angioma removal treatment?

For laser safely treat these vascular concerns, we can treat Caucasian individuals with skin types I – III, only, according to Fitzpatrick scale. Skin type IV, V and VI is extremely high on risk to develop hypopigmentation (an area of skin becoming lighter than the baseline skin colour), therefore we do not offer this treatment for Asian skin types or darker.

BE AWARE:  We do not treat pregnant or breast-feeding women with lasers as a precaution and we put treatment on hold during this time.

IMPORTANT: A letter from dermatologist to confirm the lesion is not malignant may be required before treatment takes place. We strongly recommend to check your angioma with doctor first to make sure it is a healthy lesion to treat.
